To subscribers to halug at stevens.com:

I, Dave Stevens <dave at stevens.com>, apologize for the multiple messages
regarding the upcoming meeting.

The leaders of your group did not make mistakes in notifying you of the
upcoming meeting. However, there were some problems with the list server
at STEVENS.COM, Inc.

The lists we manage are generally tuned for groups that generate several
messages each month. Because of that tuning, we tend not to cull bad
addresses from the subscription list for halug at stevens.com.

halug at stevens.com is a list with very low volume. As a result, about
80 of the 674 addresses on the list appear to be bad addresses. The
bounces from those addresses began circulating through the mail server
at STEVENS.COM. With all of the spam checking and reporting that we do
for each message, the bounces and responses to the bounces caused a
chain reaction that overloaded the server. The result was a mess that
included sending messages to legitimate subscribers several times.

We have adjusted parameters to mitigate the problem. As a result about
80 addresses have been disabled because email to them bounced.
Unfortunately a few legitimate addresses may have been dropped, but for
the most part, the dropped addresses are obsolete addresses.

In all cases, the messages bounced for some good reason. If the messages
bounced once as a "hard" bounce or twice as a "soft" bounce, the email
address was disabled on the list. A "hard" bounce is a message that the
email address doesn't work. A "soft" bounce is a message that there is a
temporary problem.

We will continue to provide email list services to HALUG and some other
groups as long as we can provide a service that is considered valuable
by your leadership. It is a free service to organizations that we
support. The service allows your leaders freedom from dealing with email
list management issues.

We will continue to try to serve you well and properly. There will be a
few glitches, but we will try to keep those to a minimum. Enjoy
halug at stevens.com and use it to your advantage.

   Dave
