Message-ID: MosQRPitos, The Pet Rock ARCI Saturday event was a LOT of fun! We braved the 80% rain chance, and went to Tom Bass Park III in Pearland for the three-hour contest. What can I say??? Our biggest problem was SUN and 80-deg F temps!!! We had three rigs to play with, i.e. Henry's K2, my FT-817 and Fred's Rockmite. Yes, Fred WA5BUC DID make a QSO with the Rockmite at 500 mW output. Henry W5HNS played with 40M antennas, but found few 40M contesters. The 20M station had a lot of activity using a ground-mounted vertical. Craig WD5BDX brought breakfast tacos and coffee for everyone. Rick W5RH consulted and helped with the antennas. It was an excellent outing for W5MSQ. We are scheduling MORE outings for 2009. Don't miss the Saturday meeting at the Red Cross building on 59 as we finalize the 2009 schedule. The Spartan Sprint is ON for Monday night. There are a bunch of glitches on the Adventure Radio website, but you can get the basics on the Spartan Sprint, and last month's results at http://arsqrp.pbwiki.com/SS+Results+12-08 72 de Andy W5ACM From Andrew.MacAllister at emerson.com Tue Jan 6 23:09:58 2009 From: Andrew.MacAllister at emerson.com (Andrew.MacAllister at emerson.com) Date: Tue, 6 Jan 2009 23:09:58 -0600 Subject: [HQRP] FW: Spartan+Sprint+Log References: Message-ID: Sunday Night's Spartan Sprint: Your+call:W5ACM Total+number+of+contacts+during+Sprint:6 Weight+of+your+station:0.14 lbs Soapbox+comments: It was a delight to find 40M usable! I listened on 80M, but came back to 40M for all of my contacts this month. The 200 mAh 7.4V LiPo pack endured everything for the event, including a ragchew with W8PBO near the end of the two hours. I was using my ATS-3A XCVR in a balsawood case with integral 1/32" keyer paddle and Koss ultra-light earbuds, in conjunction with my antique 18AVT vertical. Power output ranged from 1W at the end to nearly 3W at the beginning. Noise levels were acceptable, and it was a FUN night! Many thanks to WA9TZE, K4PQC, K4BAI, N0AR, W4VHH and W8PBO for the contacts! 72 de Andy W5ACM - Houston - Texas - EL29. Randy >From the Texas hams reflector, thanks to Brian KA5BKG: Hi, everyone: This Saturday, January 17, Houston Amateur Radio Supply will host its annual swapfest in the parking lot where it's been held in the past. Also, there will be representatives from ICOM, and there will probably be drawings for hourly prizes and a grand prize (I don't know what it will be). There will be free hot dogs, chips, and sodas. When I talked to Charley at HARS, he said that ICOM's advertising budget had been slashed and so there won't be any post cards announcing this event, and he asked me to help put the word out about this swapfest. Message-ID: South Texas Balloon Launch Team, We are taking "pre-orders" for BLT-25 T-Shirts. Please let me know sizes and quantities you would like so that an order can be placed ASAP. Prior to placing the order, I will announce the final price (yes, it will be based on "pre-order" quantity). The BLT shirts are fun to wear at amateur-radio functions, and a few dollars "profit" per shirt helps with the cost of balloons, helium, batteries, and other expendables. A few informational comments from Threads-Master KD5ELH: The shirt is white. It is a "basic" T-Shirt, i.e. we will not have a version with a pocket. The graphics look GREAT! ALL sizes are available with no surcharge for XXL and up. We hope to have a first run ready for Field Day at the Sparks Ranch in Brookshire, so get your requests in ASAP! The cost will be no greater than $20 each (double-sided printing). To The Edge Of Space! Eighty percent of my contacts this month were via 20 Meters. I would have tried 15 Meters, but the ATS-3A doesn't go that high. Although I tried using the dual-band (20 + 40) dipole hanging on my chimney, the vertical once again was the antenna of choice. The current pair of 200 mAh Li-Po batteries are getting "tired". I may need to change them out for next month. The power level was announced as 2W, but ranged from 2.5W at the beginning of the event to as low as 1W near the end. It was great to hear so many familiar callsigns along with some new ones! It was a fun event. There has been a fair amount of discussion about location. A very interesting option is near the baseball field at Katy HS. This would put us right on the county line between Waller and Fort Bend. It is easy to get to with some nice trees. Folks are checking into this. The Yahoogroups calendar has Tom Bass Park III listed as the location, and the website ( http://www.w5acm/hqrp.html ) shows Katy HS. Tom Bass Park III is in Harris County, and not as rare as the dual-county QTH of Katy HS.
