I say were because we have hit a little snag. There are a couple of last minute changes. I chose a RIT switch that happen to be a normally closed type rather than the normally open type we needed. So, all the switches have to be changed out. Dan is taking advantage of my mistake by making a last minute change also. What this all means is that we will probably be a day or so late in the release. It may not happen before Feb 1st, Monday or Feb 2nd, Tuesday although it is possible it could be Sunday the 31st. It really depends on how fast we can pull a few parts out of the 100 kits and replace them with the new parts. John is also waiting for the boxes to arrive. They should get here today or tomorrow. We are all pedaling as fast as we can. :-) We want this kit to be as perfect as we can make it. So, please hang in there! John will open the gates as soon as he can. Those of you in the State of AZ will probably see them Saturday. Everyone else can start looking for them on Monday or Tuesday. DX orders usually take from 7-10 days except for Italy which can easily take 20-30 days. Italy has a very S-L-O-W post office! It should only take you guys about 3-4 days to build them so I expect to hear some new 80 meter signals by the following weekend! If you ordered your TUT80 later than Tuesday of this week, it didn't make it in this shipment. John is out of town and I am a poor substitute for him. You will have to wait until next Friday before he can ship yours. (Directions on www.bvarc.org ) The meeting features a technical talk entitled "The Pleasures and Pitfalls of Owning a Linear Amplifier" by David, K5NDB, Ross, W5HFF and Rick, W5RH. We will be talking about all aspects of amplifiers from building your own to those that "make your coffee in the morning". Ross will be demonstrating a live, hands-on "tune-up" procedure which you can watch close hand. There will be a few amplifiers on display for you to look at inside and out. Comments from the audience will be solicited, as we want to hear it all. Although not QRP, it is a technical radio topic, which you might be interested in and to which you can add your amplifier experiences. Also being shown are the Greater Houston Hamfest video and slide show. I hope to see you there. 73. Gate will be locked until 7:30 am May 1st, 2010 EVERYTHING accumulated over 50 years as an electronics hobbyist and from traveling around the world is now available! Mark it on your calendars May 1, 2010. LOTS OF FREE STUFF. ================================================ There is one section of the barn the size of an oversize two car garage (about 500 Sq ft) full of free things. There is one section about 16 x 16 ft where everything is nearly free and certainly negotiable. If you are a "good convincer" it may be free, otherwise it may be $1-$5 donation to the South Texas BLT payload fund. My lab and workroom, about 14 x 31 ft. is open for negotiation. Prices on that stuff will depend on how much utility I place on it. You probably know that I am converting much of my equipment to digital, qrp, and microwave. If it is all analog, like some of the NTSC ATV stuff, it is now available based on offer price. If I am convinced to part with it I will give 10% of the receipts to the BLT payload fund. If any of the items above are non-electronic then the donation will go to Pug Hearts of Texas (Pug dog rescue). ------------------------- I have made arrangements to donate clothing and furniture leftovers to Goodwill/Salvation Army/Katy Christian/Pug Hearts groups. Those groups generally cannot deal with working old hard drives, electronics, radios, etc. At about 2pm or when the traffic has diminished enough, I will use the bucket loader to fill a dumpster I have rented and then lock the gate. So, pass this to all hams (and others) you wish. I have placed enough value on this stuff to keep, store, and protect it for many years -- it would be a shame to not give it a chance for adoption. I will provide water, Gatorade (or equiv), and some snacks (please bring some too -- share and share alike). These will be available for a donation to either BLT or Pug Hearts. Also a donation will get you plenty of space to tailgate your stuff as well. Hope to see you there! At the least there will be lots of chatting and story telling. Ron Sparks AG5RS 2655 Church Rd. Finally, about 90 minutes into the event, I gave up, relented, and headed back to 40M. A VERY patient NF0R tried hard to get my call, but the batteries were headed south... I was down to 1W, and knew that if I kept trying, one or both of the LiPo's would die. That was it! Thanks to all! The ATS-3a and backyard vertical did well, even with some above-average CQ-calling ops. The two LiPo, 200 mAh batteries, held up well. All of the QRN from the stormsaround Houston was gone by 8PM, and although the QSB on 20M was a bit difficult, I still got five contacts before moving down to 40M. The ATS-3A continues to perform well. The two 200-maH LiPo's were charged just before the start time, and held up with no problems, even with a fair amount of CQ ops. There was no need to move to 80M, and I noticed that several stations on 40M were quite active right up to the end. With the exception of a QRO station on 7040 that never ID'ed, and appeared to be testing/tuning an amplifier, it was an excellent Spartan Sprint! 72 de Andy W5ACM From Andrew.MacAllister at emerson.com Wed Jul 7 09:51:00 2010 From: Andrew.MacAllister at emerson.com (Andrew.MacAllister at emerson.com) Date: Wed, 7 Jul 2010 09:51:00 -0500 Subject: [HQRP] FW: 2010 AMSAT Field Day Report - W5MSQ Message-ID: From: Bruce Sent: Friday, July 02, 2010 10:05 PM To: MacAllister, Andrew [PROCESS/DAN/HOU] Subject: Re: 2010 AMSAT Field Day Report - W5MSQ Got your submission. In 2009 we had a number of problems including a bad preamp in the Yaesu FR-847, wiring problems to the elevation rotator, lossy coax and slipping rotator clamps. For 2010 the issues were repaired, and remarkably stayed fixed for the entire 2010 Field Day event. Although we somehow slept through both AO-51 V/S passes, we were delighted with operations via HO-68 later on Sunday morning. AO-07 held up well and provided many CW and SSB contacts, as did VO-52, and even some contacts via FO-29. It was certainly a great Hamsat weekend! ? The majority of the QSOs were on 40M with lots of familiar calls like N4BP, AB9CA, K4BAI and W5ESE. The noise on 80M was terrible, but I did manage three QSOs before I ran back to 40M for a final QSO with K3RLL. This was a tough one. I am hoping for better conditions in November. Perhaps the LiPo batteries will go yet another month. We'll give it a try! The old vertical is doing fine, and the rebuilt micro-thin-plywood keyer paddle is holding up well. The weight varies from month to month due to the number of bands I operate. Attendees at the meeting included W5ACM, WA5BUC, N5EM, KA5IIA, KA8KPN, KD5SBI and KK2Z. I have updated our Yahoogroup and w5acm.net for the 2010 events. The 2011 events will be added later. We will do the 160M ARRL contest on Friday night, December 3rd , near KA5IIA's QTH in Magnolia (ALL Night Contest), and the 10M ARRL contest on Saturday morning, December 11th, at Tom Bass Park III in Pearland. For 2011 we have the Pet Rock Sprint in January and FYBO 2011 in February, and don't forget the Greater Houston Hamfest in March! All agreed that outings and events were better than a lot of meetings! 72 de Andy W5ACM From Andrew.MacAllister at emerson.com Tue Nov 30 14:51:20 2010 From: Andrew.MacAllister at emerson.com (Andrew.MacAllister at emerson.com) Date: Tue, 30 Nov 2010 20:51:20 +0000 Subject: [HQRP] Map to Friday-Night HQRP 160M Contest Site Message-ID: Randy KA5IIA has provided us with a map to the site for this Friday night's HQRP 160M event. There were some glitches getting the vertical up for the second night, so operations continued with the full-size, resonant dipole. It was more like an inverted V with the center at about 75 feet, but the attention to detail by Randy KA5IIA and Warren KR1TX really paid off. Operations began around 8PM on night two, and continued to 2AM when the temperature was getting down into the 40's. The final QSO count for the event was over 100 with a final score somewhere around 11250. The memory keyer went down, so Randy got a really old memory keyer in line as a replacement. Ed N5EM and Warren made it home safely, and Randy took down the antennas on Sunday morning. Let's hope that we have some reasonable WX for this contest next year. Not many of us can put up full-size antennas for 160M. It was a great pleasure to hear fantastic signals and make contacts with some really patient and experienced operators on the Top Band! I am collecting photos to post on the HQRP web page, and hope to have them up soon. Thanks again to Randy for hosting this event! 2010 is really shaping up as an event-filled, to-the-field year for HQRP. What's next? Yes, there were a few stations on 40M that I noted prior to the event, but it looked like 80M was going to be the band of preference. It was. My ears hurt. My seriously depressed LiPo batteries hurt. However, December was a LOT better than November! Thanks to AB9CA, K4BAI, W4VHH, AE8M, W5ESE, N5GW and W0CH, I survived the QRN and at least got 7 on 80! I really need to do a little tuning on the dot side of the key paddle though. My "fist" was terrible for the duration. I operated in the ARRL 160M contest last weekend running 3W as W5MSQ (one of several operators).
